Cannabis is a genus of plants that includes both hemp and marijuana, all of which contain some portion of cannabinoids like THC and CBD.
Potency is the amount of cannabinoids present in cannabis, generally measured as the weight of these cannabinoids relative to the whole. Potency can be used to describe individual cannabinoid percentage (i.e. THC, THCa, CBD,…) or the total amounts (i.e. Total THC).
Cannabidiol. Generally the most present cannabinoid after THC, but without the psychoactive effects. Typically used for therapeutic purposes like pain or anxiety. There’s not much CBD in or on cannabis plants, it forms when its precursor CBDa is dried or heated.
Cannabidiolic acid, the precursor to CBD that is generally found in and on cannabis plants, but doesn’t have much effect on the body. It converts to CBD when it is dried and/or heated.
Hemp is a cannabis plant that is generally used for textile and industrial purposes. While it contains some amount of THC and CBD, it is widely regulated to ensure a trace amount of THC.
Tetrahydrocannabinol, or more specifically (−)-trans-Δ⁹-tetrahydrocannabinol. The primary psychoactive cannabinoid in cannabis. There’s not much THC in or on cannabis plants, it forms when its precursor THCa is dried or heated.
Tetrahydrocannabinolic acid, the precursor to THC that is generally found in and on cannabis plants, but doesn’t have much effect on the body. It converts to THC when it is dried and/or heated.
